After breakfast we requested a late check out and headed out to do a bit of last minute shopping. Once back at the hotel we changed and finished packing. We are connecting in Auckland and heading home. It was a great week on the South Island of New Zealand.

anzac Day

Today is ANZAC day so a lot of celebrations going on. It is the anniversary of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps Our room at the Millennium overlooked Cathedral Square and about 6AM the band marched in! We opened the window and got to watch the festivities from our room.
After breakfast we were picked up by John and Sally and we headed to Akaroa on the Banks Peninsula. Itís a pretty little town that was originally settled by the French. Luckily the sun has come out and we were able to get some great views from the lookout above town. After a fabulous lunch we headed to the docks. Sunnie got to swim with the dolphins. They are hectors dolphins, not like Flipper. It was windy but a good time was had by all.
Once back in Christchurch we headed to Oxford Terrace and the strip of cafes along the Avon River. We were lucky to get a spot by one of the fireplaces so we could sit outside. We had an awesome dinner. Walked back to the hotel to pack for the last time.

heading north

Early start to keep heading north. We need to make it to Greymouth and drop the car before noon. Did manage to stop and put a dent in the credit card at the Greenstone shops in Hokitika. Made it to Greymouth in plenty of time. The car rental drop off is right across from the rail station so couldnít be more convenient. Checked in for our train and had time for a nice lunch of fish and chips!
Once on board the train we settled into our seats for the ride to Christchurch. Unfortunately it is still raining but we still got to see some scenery and go through many tunnels and viaducts. The journey takes about four and a half hours.
When we arrived in Christchurch we checked into the hotel and had a bite to eat. After all the driving, shopping, training and eating we were tired so hit the bed early.
